The Church of Epiphany and St. Mark

church epiphany

These two Anglican churches began as two separate religious sites. In 1984, the two churches merged and marked this union with the building of a new church. Seeing the need for child care services in the neighborhood, the government planted a day care centre called the St. Mark’s Child Care Centre. Although it is named as such, the St. Mark Child Care Centre is not run by the church. The church simply rents out the property to the day care centre. Recently, when the housing units beneath the church were closed, the Parkdale Neighborhood Church took over the space. Together the two churches have tried to build activities and programs for the community.(1)

Services

Some of the programs that are offered by the Church of Epiphany and St. Mark’s and the Parkdale Neighborhood Church are done so through a joint effort. The programs include the teaching of food preparation, dietary control as well as some programs geared to help maintain a healthy family for people who have to work around a tight budget.(2) The church has made a great effort to create a close-knit community within the neighborhood and has advertised a variety of activities such as Make Your Own Lap-Labyrinth. For only $10, anyone can come and build a Lap-Labyrinth out of Plexiglas so that they can reflect and pray in the comfort of their own home; letting their fingers do all the walking.

Demographic

Those who use the church’s services are mainly members of the parish. Nevertheless, it always welcomes anyone who wishes to drop in. People of different ethnicity attend the church but the predominant members are of African Canadian descent. Many different kinds of families attend the church and view it as more than just a place of worship. After service has ended, teenagers enjoy sitting on the church's front steps to converse with friends and complete their homework.

Displays

Long after service has ended on Sunday afternoon, the church is still open for anyone to come in. A wide array of newsletters, brochures and tacked announcements are scattered on the back tables and bulletin boards. Any events that take place in the community are advertised their, whether it is faith-based are not and most are family oriented activities. The church is in the process of building its website found here: http://www.epiphanyandstmark.ca/.
