Writing the Austrian Traditions:
A Conference on the Relation between Austrian Philosophy and Literature
(University of Toronto, May 12-14, 2000)

The purpose of this conference is to discuss the Austrian traditions of philosophy and literature in various connections. In addition, the comparative study of philosophy and literature in a broader cultural context provides new perspectives and additional material for a better understanding of both fields, their definition, and interrelations.
Ranging from the former Austro-Hungarian Empire and its successor states to the present, these Austrian traditions offer a challenging and productive frame for approaching general questions of philosophy and literary theory with specific examples.
These interdisciplinary links are not only of historical relevance, but continue to challenge ongoing debates in various fields, starting from literary studies and philosophy of literature to philosophy of language and metaphysics.

The conference will center around the following topics:

  • general perspectives on the formation of a distinctive Austrian tradition both in philosophy and literature
  • cases that illustrate this relation and its relevance for the creation of the "Austrian Tradition"
  • common grounds of the literary and the philosophical tradition: thematization of the epistemic relevance of language and interest in personal identity
  • philosophical topics in literature and literary style of philosophers
  • the influence of philosophical issues on literary practice and theory
  • alternative perspectives on these subjects in actual debates, e.g. on modernity and postmodernity, multiculturalism, or on cultural identities in "Mitteleuropa"

This list contains suggestions only. Papers on other topics that provide stimulating views on the general question of the conference are welcome. The conference language will be English.

It is envisaged that the conference proceedings will be published.

Please send proposals for papers of 30 minutes duration before the end of JANUARY 2000
